Product Description

Cisco SPA-1XCHOC48/DS3 1-Port Channelized OC-48/STM-16 Shared Port Adapter is a carrier-class interface module designed for compatible Cisco routing platforms requiring channelized SONET/SDH connectivity.

The module provides one OC-48 / STM-16 optical interface and supports channelized operation down to DS3-level services, making it suitable for legacy telecom aggregation, carrier transport, SONET/SDH infrastructure, and service-provider routing environments. Cisco identifies the unit as a double-height / full-size SPA depending on the host platform documentation. Cisco

Cisco documentation lists support for the module on platforms including the ASR 9000 Series and Cisco 7600 Series when used with the appropriate SIP/interface processor and supported IOS or IOS XR release. For the ASR 9000 platform, Cisco lists minimum support beginning with IOS XR 4.0.0. Cisco

The SPA uses replaceable OC-48/STM-16 SFP optics. Cisco originally offered:

  • SFP-OC48-SR — single-mode short reach, up to about 2 km
  • SFP-OC48-IR1 — intermediate reach, up to about 15 km
  • SFP-OC48-LR2 — long reach, up to about 80 km Cisco

SFP optical transceiver is not automatically included unless specifically stated with the product.

Cisco has discontinued this adapter; the product reached end of sale and all Cisco support services ended by January 31, 2021. That makes it primarily a replacement / legacy-network maintenance part today.
